Alloying effects on the microstructure of Fe-1mass%M binary alloys treated by austenitic nitriding and quenching treatment

Surface microstructures were investigated in pure iron and Fe-1mass%M (M = Mn, Cr, Al, Si) alloys gaseous-nitrided at 1123 K quenching to reveal the alloying effects on surface hardening by nitrogen (N) martensite. Thicker hardened layers with higher hardness than obtained Mn-added whereas additions of Si Al lead increase reduction layer thickness. On other hand, adding Cr decreases both thickness layer. No precipitation alloy nitride is observed austenite nor internal ferrite region alloy. Meanwhile, CrN(B1) AlN(wurtzite) particles are dispersed regions Cr- Al-added alloys, respectively. Unlike those (austenite+ α-Si3N4) lamellar structure formed Si-added followed martensite transformation high temperature during quenching. Phase diagrams Fe-M-N systems can consistently describe microstructure evolution.
